I was just reading over on ClareHurlers.com a thread criticising the gardi. I think the root of the problem lies higher up than the ordinary gardi themselves. I remember reading a letter in the newspaper a few years ago from a garda's wife. She said that the inspector visited the garda station once a month and if any garda did not have any summonses on his book, he was given hell.
If that is true, and I have no reason to believe it isn't, then it is no reason that the gardi are feared and hated rather than respected as the protectors of the people. Here they are expected to make criminals out of ordinary law-abiding people in order to satisfy the ego of some Nazi-minded inspector, and even the laws that exist are perverted. Why is a gardi car allowed to park in a dangerous and illegal position (so the driver can pop into the newsagents to buy a newspaper) when Joe Ordinary would be fined for this offence? Are gardi not subject to the same laws as everyone else?
Can anyone have respect for laws that are so obviously partial and that are amended constantly to collect more revenue for the government?
